The vast majority of consumers (85%) say they consider sustainability in their purchases more now than they did five years ago.1 Businesses are taking note and investing in more sustainable business practices as a result.
For Acer and ChromeOS, this has meant more than pledging to become carbon-free. The two companies have put their commitments into action by adjusting the way they manufacture, dispose of, program and package their products. Acer and ChromeOS are working to build a sustainable future to preserve environmental resources and protect our health and the health of future generations.
End-user compute devices generate 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Doing their part, Acer and ChromeOS uncovered ways to reduce waste and energy consumption.
1% of global greenhouse gas emissions =
and associated energy consumed by 4.2B active users each year2
Acer and ChromeOS knew that when choosing a sustainable device, end-point-users want a complete package: reduced carbon emissions and lower energy consumption costs. As a result, creating lifecycle sustainability became a key priority.
Lifecycle sustainability includes:
Manufacturing products responsibly with little waste
Energy-efficient
usage
Reusing or recycling devices at end of life
Satisfying all of these points reduces both costs, as much as $482 per device per year, and carbon emissions.3
Acer and ChromeOS have made strong commitments to work toward sustainability. Their efforts have focused on manufacturing devices that consume less energy, provide efficient charging and have optimized device performance. Devices are also being made with more sustainable materials, such as Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastics.

Acer’s goal is to reach 60% renewable energy use by 2025 and 100% renewable energy by 2035. Its sustainability efforts are being documented and shared through its environmental consideration initiative Earthion.

In addition to Earthion, Acer launched Project Humanity in 2017 to encourage employees and suppliers to focus on positive changes for the environment. With more than 40 countries and 7,700 employees contributing to efforts, the equivalent of 60 tons of CO2 has been reduced through this initiative.
ChromeOS is also working to support sustainability efforts by lowering carbon footprints. With its cloud-first platform and efficient power management capabilities, Google ChromeOS devices consume as much as 46% less energy than comparable competitor devices.3
Acer ChromeOS enterprise devices are not only sustainable technology choices, but they also offer a number of safeguards for data and privacy. As the workforce has shifted to hybrid and remote locations, and society adopts more digitized platforms, cyberthreats and data security are other important environmental concerns to keep in mind.
Organizations that practice secure erasure on devices containing company information are able to reduce carbon emissions through reuse programs. For example, Blancco securely erased 54 million IT assets in 2021, preventing 150.4 millon pounds (68.2 million kilograms) of electronic equipment from going to a landfill.4
Another example of the connection between sustainability and security is Google ChromeOS’s cloud-profile capabilities that facilitate sharing between multiple users with per-user encryption, off-machine file storage, tab and user sandboxing, site isolation, and more, helping organizations remain efficient with fewer resources, and ultimately less waste.
Companies are facing high levels of threat as new digital tools and remote integrations expand the attack surface. Acer and ChromeOS deliver cloud-native security, strengthened endpoint security and simplified endpoint management to help safeguard users and data against ransomware, malware and phishing threats.
Google ChromeOS firmware updates every six weeks, far more often than other systems. Updates happen quickly and in the background, with no downtime or disruption for users. All Google ChromeOS devices receive the same updates, regardless of manufacturer. This process helps organizations maintain a security standard for their enterprisewide devices.
Acer ChromeOS additional device security features:
Enhanced trusted platform module
Built-in webcam privacy cover
Kensington lock slot
Intel vPro technology security features
Following device purchase, Acer Premier Support provides support that prolongs the device life and contributes to sustainability efforts. The Acer Premier service team is a dedicated group of experienced, U.S.-based Level 2 technicians who provide personalized service, quick resolution and work to extend the product lifecycle.
The Acer Take-Back Recycling program helps organizations safely dispose of PCs, batteries and retired equipment. Acer only works with recycling vendors that are certified in environmental management, and Acer oversees a third-party auditing program to ensure standards are met.
Sustainability efforts are critical to future generations. Acer and ChromeOS are committed to full lifecycle sustainability practices and security, and practice innovation and care when developing new eco-friendly products.
