Are You Prepared to Migrate Off Windows Server 2003?
Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows Server 2003 on July 14, 2015. Any bugs, security vulnerabilities or other problems users have with the software will force them either to live with a flawed product, purchase an extended support contract or migrate to a newer, supported operating system. Microsoft reports there are about 24 million active and virtual instances of Server 2003 today. Consensus among industry analysts is that many organizations won’t complete their migrations in time, but everyone should consider the move mandatory.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, released a report showing that tech companies are the leaders of providing corporate LGBT-inclusive workplace standards. The Corporate Equality Index (CEI), first published in 2002, rates companies on a scale between one and 100. Companies such as Google, eBay, Groupon and Yahoo! are all in the 100-point club. This year, a record 366 businesses earned perfect scores and 14 are in the computer hardware, software and data services area of the tech sector. Newcomers Facebook and Yelp, as well as six Internet and retailing services, were among the top performers.

Worse still, many organisations and IT pros are unaware of the huge financial costs and security risks should they continue running Windows Server 2003 past the end of life date. Reports from HP claim that more than 11 million systems are still running Windows Server 2003. With fewer than 240 days left until end of life, this a huge problem as the estimated time required to migrate a datacentre of 100 or more servers can range from a minimum of three months and upwards of 18 months.

At the time, analysts said many firms had been slow to migrate, and that it was unlikely every business would do so before Microsoft ends support on July 14, 2015. The technology is more common in industries like health care, government and utilities, as well as some retail point-of-sale systems.
